Badminton Reigns Over Other Kindsa Sports, Again

By Brooks Brenneis

Billed as “a chance to pick on someone your own size for a change,” over 70 regulars from Chicago, Rockford, Milwaukee, and Madison took part in the 8th annual B.R.O.O.K.S. tournament, sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Badminton Club on 20 March 1993.  Among the highlights especially pleasing to see was the spirited play of newcomer Frank Panice, along with partners Brian Troesch and Marta Brenner.  Observers –and opponents – saw indefatigable movement wedded, for the moment, to rough-hewn skills and strategy.  The combination led Frank and his partners to the finals of the Mens and Mixed Doubles.  One has the feeling that Frank may work his ay up to much tougher competition.  Womens Doubles was won by and especially deserving pair.  For most of us in this tournament, the A finals are only a dream.  Pam Woodruff’s and Ayse Unat’s dream came true, and ended with a thrilling (9, 17-15) victory.

As this year’s events marks my retirement from running the tournament, it is pleasure to thank all of you whose help and direction have made these tournaments easy to organize and run, and great fun to play in.  In particular, I want to thank the consistent and gracious support of Mike Rousse, Fred Coleman, Paul Malischke, Lor Thao, George Bauer, and Sandy Norton.  Willing help has always been available from the roster of the UW Badminton Club.  So, next year, I’ll be back, but only to play.  But we’ll be back under new management.  You’ll have to wait to see if they come up with some new title.  Until then, thanks again and maybe next year your dream of the A finals will come true.  Or in the case of Fred and me, beating George Bauer and Roland Chin in the B finals.
